Introduction
The recently developed Tourism Strategy provides a Vision and Objectives for Somerset so that we can develop our Tourism Offer and focus on sustainable tourism.
The Strategic Tourism Group was formed in order to ensure that the strategy is delivered, reviewed, and further developed. It is a collaboration between specialists in the tourism sector, together with members of Somerset Council, Town and Parish Councils and businesses, to achieve local benefits and economic growth. It will be the central point for information and tourism activity and will also share Grant Fund opportunities.
Somerset Council has a three-year agreement with Visit Somerset to maximise the promotion of our area and to promote experiences that benefit both visitors and our Mendip communities, all year round. The priority focus areas are listed in the Tourism Strategy document, and they aim to increase sustainable and cultural tourism.
Focus of the strategy
The focus of the Strategy is to maintain a flexible approach to meet changing tourism needs and the availability of resources and funds at Somerset Council.
The strategy document also outlines Somerset Council’s responsibility to support climate and ecological commitments, by improving public transport links and increasing the number of multi-user paths across the district.
