Some key information

  • This is a hybrid role with a requirement to attend County Hall, Taunton at least once a week for team collaboration.
  • The post holder is entitled to 30 days of annual leave, in addition to bank holidays.
  • The post holder will assume a senior role within the council’s Cyber Security team. The team operates on a rota basis, covering cyber security functions within the detect, prevent and respond framework.
  • This is a full-time, permanent role of 37 hours per week. We cover hours between 08:00 and 18:00 via early and late shifts.

What will I be doing?

We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • As a Senior Engineer within the Security Operations Team, you will work predominantly in the Identity and Access Management (IAM) specialism, designing, implementing, and managing identity and access controls and policies across both cloud and on-premise environments.
  • You will work with a range of technologies, with a strong focus on Microsoft products such as Active Directory (including Group Policy and Certificate Services), Entra ID (including Enterprise Applications, Application Registrations, Privileged Identity Management, and Conditional Access), and Intune (including Configuration Policies), applying RBAC to ensure least-privilege access and compliance with internal security policies.
  • You will collaborate with Security Operations and wider ICT colleagues to enforce access control policies and respond to identity-related incidents, with a strong focus on trust and assurance, including email reputation safeguards like DMARC monitoring and reporting, as well as managing and renewing digital certificates.
  • You will demonstrate a keen interest in cyber security and contribute to the day-to-day operational success of the Cyber Security and IAM & AD teams, while also having a voice in security strategy and planning.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

  • Experience in IAM technologies including a good understanding of Active Directory, Entra ID, and other cloud identity platforms.
  • Familiarity with access governance, compliance, and audit requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills, alongside the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate are a plus.
