Many people are learning and sharing skills to do simple repairs to save money and avoid throwing items away.
Repair events bring people together and offer practical help when commercial repair costs are prohibitive. Many small repairs are easy to do with a little know-how, lots of help can be found online, and plenty of people in your community have useful skills.
Repair cafés – the global movement
Started in The Netherlands, Repair Café has helped repair go global, with more than 1,000 Repair Cafés worldwide and many UK groups running sessions under the Repair Café brand.
Repair Café has put together useful resources to help more groups get started. Somerset Waste Partnership has bought a copy of the “Repair Café how-to toolkit”, which is available free to Somerset groups on request (terms and conditions apply). For a copy, please email us quoting “Repair Café toolkit” in the subject line. This does not commit you to running an event.
Repair cafés are just one approach. Somerset has a great network of repair groups and events under various names, run by dedicated and skilled volunteers and fixing household items.
Somerset repair groups are recruiting new volunteers. Can you donate your time and skills? Groups need people to help fix items, coordinate, welcome, make refreshments, publicity and more. Whatever your skills and interests, do contact a local group.
Repair groups volunteering has many benefits:
- Acquire new skills and confidence.
- Gain satisfaction and achievement.
- Meet like-minded people in your area.
- Help create a more sustainable world.
