Introduction
Regeneration work brings economic and social activity back to communities that have suffered decline. Current spatial planning policy identifies areas for regeneration through the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) and Local Development Framework documents.
The Localism Act now provides for the abolition of the RSS and structure plans and they will cease to form part of the statutory development plan. This is going to take place once the Government has considered the outcomes of the environmental assessment of the RSS revocation and revocation orders have been approved by parliament.
What we do
The focus of regeneration work in Somerset will continue to be in parts of Bridgwater, Taunton and Yeovil in accordance with the policies of Local Development Framework documents, and existing and emerging national policy. On a smaller scale, regeneration work is also occurring in numerous market towns across Somerset.
Regeneration usually involves the development of land commonly referred to as ‘brownfield land’, or previously developed land. Across Somerset there are a wide range of regeneration projects that are improving the local area, helping business and assisting people to get jobs.
The County Council will continue to collaborate with district and borough councils and key stakeholders in delivering strategic large scale regeneration projects, having due regard to local needs and circumstances.
The regeneration work in Bridgwater is being led by Sedgemoor District Council under the project title of Bridgwater Vision.
The regeneration work in Taunton is being led by a partnership under the project title of Project Taunton. There is more information available on the Project Taunton website.
The regeneration work in Yeovil is being led by South Somerset District Council under the project title of Yeovil Vision. There is more information available on the Yeovil Vision website.
