Introduction

Good health supports a child or young person’s ability to grow, develop, stay safe and achieve as they grow up. This lays the foundations of a healthy and fulfilled adult life.

Public Health has a critical role to play in improving the health and wellbeing of all children in Somerset and in reducing the health inequalities experienced by those children and their families in greatest need.

Public Health priorities for children and young people include promoting healthy weight, preventing substance misuse, improving emotional health and wellbeing, sexual health, and accident prevention and personal safety.

We also have a responsibility for commissioning Public Health Nurses, including School Nurses and Health Visitors. We also commission the mandatory National Child Measurement Programme.

The Somerset Health and Wellbeing in Learning Programme specifically provides a resource for staff working with children and young people in a variety of settings including Somerset Health in Schools.
