Education Accessibility Protocol

Funding that helps pupils who need bespoke and significant physical changes to a mainstream school site

Introduction

Education Accessibility Protocol (EAP) funding is allocated by Somerset Council to support Somerset’s mainstream schools carry out ‘reasonable adjustments’ to make them accessible for local pupils with complex physical, medical or sensory needs.

The funding, and the work it enables, supports the Council and schools within Somerset to meet their duties contained in the Equality Act 2010 and Part 3 of the Children and Families Act 2014.

Reasonable Adjustments

Reasonable adjustments may include improvements to:

  • physical access to the school – for example, ramps and handrails
  • physical movement around the buildings – for example, automated doors
  • access to the curriculum – for example, specialist furniture and IT equipment
  • facilities within the building for disabled pupils – for example, medical rooms and acoustic improvements
