Introduction

Libraries in Somerset have lots going on and are great places to visit to learn and play. They have lots of activities for children and families. It doesn’t matter how old, or young you are, there’s something for you in a Somerset library – books, films, free public access computers, storytimes, even free Wi-Fi.

Use these links to find out more about some of the things you can do in your local library.

Join to join in

Until you join you won’t know what you are missing – and membership is free.

Autism Friendly Libraries

All libraries are working towards ‘Autism Friendly Library’ status, so that staff are trained in autism awareness and are actively making appropriate adjustments. You can find out more on our Accessible Services and Health and Wellbeing page.

Somerset Autism Collection

The Somerset Autism Collection is a selection of books and DVDs to help provide support and understanding for people with autism, their families, friends and carers. Find out more.

If you can’t get to a library, you can still contact the library service,

Accessible reading

Somerset Library Service has developed an audio explainer which allows visually impaired people to hear about the inclusive services that are available to them.

Somerset Libraries have many initiatives to make libraries as accessible to as many people as possible – whatever their needs. You can find more information on our Accessible Services and Health and Wellbeing page.

Visual impairment and Dyslexia

If you are blind, partially sighted or have other disabilities that affect reading such as dyslexia, libraries can amend membership to give access to specific concessions. You can find out more information on our Accessible Services and Health and Wellbeing page.

Computer training

The Library Service provides computer training for beginners, and there are free online training courses for carers in Taunton, West Somerset, South Somerset and Sedgemoor Libraries. You can find computer courses on our Libraries events page.
