What are Environmental Champions?

Our Environmental Champions are a network of Somerset residents passionate about the environment. As an Environmental Champion, you would have the opportunity to shape and guide our work, be an ambassador for positive environmental change in their areas and get involved with local projects. You can do as much or as little as you like, from spreading the word to getting involved in different events and projects to help communities across Somerset.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute towards positive climate emergency action in Somerset. You will be an ambassador for climate change awareness in your community, and help spread information and positive action throughout the county.

You may be representing a green group, or you may be an individual who is interested in learning more about combating climate change. Your role can be as big or small as you like. Activities can range from spreading the word about environmental projects to leading projects to help us stay on the right track for our carbon neutrality goals. Each of you will have a unique part to play in protecting the environment.

What will be involved

  • Events (online, with a plan to be in-person in the long term) to encourage networking and knowledge sharing among groups and individuals. We hope to include guest speakers to share environmental knowledge and local projects.
  • Newsletter with environment or climate information from Somerset Council. As Environment Champions, you will be able to contribute and shape content to share with other champions across Somerset. You can help us by sharing this information with your group, neighbours or parish.
  • Online networking platform for collaboration and resource sharing among groups, parishes and Environment Champions.

Environmental Champions sign up

To deliver on Somerset Council’s Climate Emergency Strategy it is critical that we have strong links with communities, parishes, towns, businesses, local stakeholders and individual residents. Our Environmental Champions form a vital part of this communication and engagement.

Building on the fantastic work of networks set up by South Somerset, Sedgemoor and Mendip District Council we have combined our previous district networks into Somerset-wide Environmental Champions.
