Introduction

Somerset Council maintains a range of football and sports pitches across the county. These pitches may be owned by the council or operated in partnership with parish councils, schools, and commercial organisations.

Services include pitch setup (posts and sockets), pitch repairs, line marking, and grass cutting.

Pitch Locations Across Somerset

Key sites include:

  • Burnham Road Playing Field, Burnham-on-Sea: 4 senior, 2 nine-a-side and mini pitches (changing rooms via local club).
  • Highbridge Recreation Ground: 1 senior pitch (changing rooms via local club).
  • West Shepton Playing Fields, Shepton Mallet: football pitch available for hire.
  • Wells Recreation Ground: football area available for scheduled fixtures.
  • Frome Rugby Club (Gypsy Lane, Frome): pitches available via direct booking.

Taunton area sites including

  • Cotford St Luke – 1 x senior and x1 9×9
  • Taunton Green – 2 x senior and x1 9×9
  • Priorswood – 2 x senior
  • Blackbrook – 2 x senior, x1 9×9 and x1 7×7
  • Victoria Park – will be x1 American football, x1 baseball, x1 beach volleyball
  • Galmington x 2 senior, x1 9×9 and potential to have x 2 further 9×9 overlaid on one of the senior pitches
  • Hamilton x 2 senior and x1 9×9
  • Dobree Park x1 9×9
  • Beech Grove pitch – owned by Somerset Council, but used by agreement
  • Wellington Rec – x1 senior and x1 9×9
  • Wellington Playing Fields pitch 1 (senior) used only by Wellington Football Club 1st and reserves teams or by agreement – pitch 2 senior and 1x7x7

Facilities vary by site. Some locations provide access to changing rooms via local clubs, while others may not have changing facilities.

 

Booking Information

To book a football pitch in Somerset, customers should contact Somerset Council Regulatory and Operations Services or use the council contact service.

Bookings should include details such as preferred date, location, and pitch size. A minimum of 72 hours to 3 working days’ notice is typically required.

Season-long bookings should be supported with a full fixture list before the first match.

Requirements

  • Public liability insurance with a minimum cover of £5 million is required.
  • Payment is required in advance of bookings.
  • Some pitches may have restricted access or be reserved for club use unless otherwise agreed.

Typical hire charges are:

  • Adult match: approximately £38.90 to £74.60 depending on location.
  • Youth match: approximately £26.00 to £40.30 depending on location.
