Decolonising the Curriculum KS3

Diversifying and Decolonising the KS3 Curriculum is a resource developed by THRIVE for for Somerset Council to support schools working with young people in Somerset to understand, explore and celebrate the increasing diversity in our local communities.

National Archives – Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Histories Lesson Plans

Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Histories accessible version – The National Archives – This resource contains a hyperlinked list of National Archives current resources for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic histories on The National Archives website. It includes education resources, exhibitions, research guides, blog posts and podcasts by staff and external writers and links to external websites.

Facing History UK  Facing History and Ourselves Lesson Plans and Resources

Facing History UK provides a range of resources for support discussion with pupils around sensitive topics including  Race, Racism, Identity, Anti-Semitism,  the Holocaust and Human Behaviours. Professional learning resources and webinars are also provided to support Teachers preparing to teach this content.

BBC Bitesize

Campaigns for racial equality in Britain after 1945 – KS3 History – BBC Bitesize resources on race equality including national as well as regional topics (for example, Bristol Bus Boycott).

Black History Month

Schools can access a variety of free and subscription resources each year to support Black History Month via national organisations and BBC Bitesize.

Black History Month Magazine produces posters and resources that Schools may decide to purchase for a cost of around £100.

Hackney Diverse Curriculum

Hackney Diverse Curriculum – Hackney council provides access for schools to its diverse curriculum resources. Schools are able to create 1 log on account per setting

Local heritage packs

The Southwest Heritage Service provided information for schools on what resources are available in their archives that could support Black History Month in schools.

Representing Race in the curriculum – subject guides

Teachers and Council staff in Somerset have worked on an initial set of guides for Secondary Schools to broaden how race is represented within the curriculum in Somerset. These guides can be downloaded and edited and used as a starting point.

GLADE Global Learning Boxes

Global Resource Loans | GLADE (Global Learning and Development Education) – GLADE (Global Learning and Development Education Centre) provides resources that are available to schools, communities. business and organisations across Somerset and further afield.

GLADE resource boxes provide a variety of country collections includes artefacts, photo packs around common themes such as Homes and family, education and play, food and cooking, out and about, transport and communications, with additional activity packs relating to specific global issues or products associated with that country.
