We are carrying out a review of Council Tax accounts where a single person discount is currently awarded, increasing our efforts to identify fraudulent behaviour.
Within Somerset Council there are currently over 90,000 Council Taxpayers that are receiving a 25% single person discount. Using intelligent data matching, we are comparing records to check the validity of the discounts awarded.
If you have received a single person discount review letter, please tell us your current circumstances so that we can update our records.
The quickest and easiest way to complete your review is online. You will need your unique PIN number, Council Tax account number and postcode. You can find this information on the letter or email we have sent you.

You will be asked to confirm:
- Who lives at the property
- If anyone has recently moved in or out
- Other information relevant to your Single Person Discount entitlement.
Most residents will only need to provide basic information to confirm their circumstances.
What happens if I don’t respond?
If you do not return your review your discount will be stopped, increasing the amount of Council Tax you need to pay.
Residents found to be receiving a discount they are not entitled to will have the discount stopped and backdated as far as the evidence supports. We can impose a civil penalty or in serious cases, prosecute those found to be cheating the system.
