Introduction
Registered food businesses in the Somerset Council area wishing to export food or drinks out of the UK, must obtain the correct documentation for each consignment being exported. It is the exporters responsibility to find out the requirements or restrictions which may apply in the destination country.
Exporting food and drink products not of animal origin
Food and drink not of animal origin do not generally require a formal export health certificate, but the country receiving the products may require documentation to verify the business complies with food law. Somerset Council can issue a food safety premises endorsement for export certificate for registered businesses in the Somerset Council area.

Animal and Plant Health Agency Health Certificate
If you wish to export products of animal origin you may need an Export Health Certificate (EHC). The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is normally responsible for issuing EHCs for products of animal origin.
Visit the GOV.UK website to find an Export Health Certificate for the products you intend to export. If an appropriate EHC template is not listed, contact APHA at exports@apha.gov.uk or 03000 200 301 to confirm what EHC requirements are needed. Before applying read the guidance on how to get an EHC and how to apply for an EHC.
Before you submit any applications to APHA, you will need to contact an official vet (OV) or Food Competent Certifying Officer (FCCO) who will certify your EHC. EHCs for meat, dairy and eggs need to be certified by a vet (Official Veterinarian). Find a professional to certify an EHC.
Food Competent Certifying Officers (FCCOs) at Somerset Council can certify EHCs for fish and fishery products, honey and some composite products. If you require the service of a Somerset Council FCCO to sign an EHC, contact us on our General Enquiry form before making an application to APHA.
