About the event
When a child is overwhelmed, their behaviour is often a sign that they are struggling to cope. Understanding what is behind the behaviour can help us respond in ways that reduce stress, build trust, and support regulation.
This workshop explores why children and young people can become dysregulated and how factors such as anxiety, sensory differences, communication difficulties, and uncertainty can contribute to escalation. We will look at practical ways to recognise early warning signs, reduce triggers, and support children before they reach crisis point.
Together, we will explore:
Understanding behaviour as communication.
Common causes of dysregulation and emotional overwhelm.
Recognising early signs that a child may be struggling.
Practical strategies to help prevent escalation.
Using low arousal approaches to de-escalate safely and effectively.
How to respond during a crisis and support recovery afterwards.
Creating safety plans and building long-term coping skills.
By the end of the session, you will have a better understanding of why behaviour happens, feel more confident supporting your child during difficult moments, and leave with practical strategies to use at home.
