About the event

For children and young people experiencing selective mutism, speaking can become incredibly difficult in certain situations, even when they want to communicate. The aim isn’t to “make them talk”, but to reduce pressure, build confidence and create more opportunities for communication in ways that feel safe.

This practical session will explore:
What selective mutism can look like in everyday life
Why “just say hello” or “use your voice” can increase pressure
Building moments of communication without demanding speech
Using alternative ways to communicate, gestures, writing, visuals, technology and more
Practical ways to support communication at home and in the community
Supporting friendships, activities and social situations
What to do when a child freezes, shuts down or cannot respond

This is a practical, compassionate session focused on connection before communication. No forcing. No “they just need to be brave.” Just realistic strategies to help children feel safer, more understood and more able to communicate in their own way.
