Description
A stunning, Modernist library building adjoining Downside Abbey’s church of St Gregory the Great (one of England’s finest examples of neo-Gothic architecture, see separate listing).
Constructed between 1965-70, the five-storey structure, geometric library is connected by an elevated walk way to the East wing of the monastery (built 1970-75).
The exterior is largely hexagonal in shape, topped by a triangular structure containing the lift pulleys. The interior spaces circular, constructed around a central spiral staircase.
The library houses around 500,000 volumes and has several reading rooms and study spaces with stunning views.
