Description
A Grade I listed country house, in a secluded valley on the edge of Exmoor now operating as a field trip base for the Field Studies Council. Its architecture covers medieval, Elizabethan, Tudor and Georgian era. An impressive entrance and porch date from 1599, rear additions and ornate plasterwork were added in 1640 and Georgian extensions made to the southwest frontage in the early 1700s.
Key features include the late medieval Great Hall, the grand West Staircase (circa 1700) with stunning Rococo plasterwork, an atmospheric wood panelled drawing room and a late Medieval kitchen courtyard.
Adjoining the house is the picturesque church of St Mary’s which dates from the 13th and 14th Century. The grounds are made up of heritage parkland and ancient woodland featuring many ancient oak trees.
