About
We work in partnership with local CCTV user groups, community safety organisations and emergency service partners to help keep Somerset safe.
Following the creation of Somerset Council as a unitary authority, the former Sedgemoor and Mendip CCTV schemes have been brought together under a single service. CCTV cameras across multiple Somerset town centres are now monitored from the Bridgwater CCTV Control Room, providing a coordinated approach to public space surveillance, crime prevention and community safety across Somerset.
CCTV operations are governed by relevant data protection legislation and surveillance regulations. Images from cameras are recorded and retained for a minimum of 14 days. Where there is no lawful or legitimate reason to retain them, recordings are securely deleted.
With almost 32 years of experience serving Somerset communities, the Somerset CCTV service plays a vital role in supporting public safety and crime prevention. Licensed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA), we work closely with the Police, local authorities, community safety partners and businesses to monitor CCTV cameras in key locations across Somerset.
Monitoring takes place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, supporting the prevention and detection of crime, helping to protect vulnerable people, and assisting emergency services in responding to incidents.

Testimonials
“This arrest followed some really great joint working between the CCTV operators and me from the Intel department at Bridgwater. I was able to keep in contact with the CCTV team and also direct in resources from the local beat team which resulted in the mentioned male being arrested after he was seen to drop a large warp containing individual wraps of heroin and crack cocaine”
“As a direct result of CCTV vigilance and prompt response and information sharing, his car was quickly identified and circulated, a act report going straight onto ANPR, which led to his vehicle “pinging” and being sought. After a short pursuit, with vehicle contact, he was arrested”.
“The arrest was made as a direct result of their diligence and persistence of CCTV. I was very happy to transmit the same over the channel, being very grateful for their actions”
“CCTV actions last night have most likely saved a man’s life, prevented a murder, and helped lock up 4 well known violent nominals who are now in custody. My thanks goes out to the operator for her actions and I believe she deserves some specific reward and recognition for this”.
“Thanks to your efforts, we haven’t just identified traffic offences. We’ve also flagged disqualified drivers and wanted individuals. Even if you don’t always receive updates, please don’t underestimate the value of your work.
