What will I be doing?

The Independent Travel Trainer sits within the Transformation and Partnership Team within Inclusion in Somerset Council. We are child/young people focused, dealing with a wide variety of activities to help support children and young people to travel independently. The scheme was set up in 2003 and it has been highly successful in giving students who would otherwise be using taxis and minibuses to college a change to travel independently with their peer groups and succeed at an important life skill.

We’re working to improve the lives of Children here in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • Teaching children and young people the necessary skills to be able to travel independently to their education establishment.
  • Going to a child or young persons home to work with them, accessing the most suitable public bus route or walking route to their school/college.
  • Liaising with parents/carers to make sure the student is getting all the support needed to be successful in travelling independently.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you:

  • Experience of working with pupils in an education setting and working with staff from a range of professional backgrounds.
  • Good IT skills, including a proficient use in Microsoft packages such as Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office.
  • A good standard of general education, 3 or more GCSE’s including Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent.
  • Good organisation skills, so that you can organised you work efficiently with the ability to plan your day/week as necessary, as well as planning journeys.
  • Good administrative skills, where you must be numerate and can record facts and figures accurately.
  • Evidence of continued professional development to update skills and knowledge related to children’s learning.

Use of your own car is essential for this role, as you will be required to travel freely throughout the County daily.
