The Total Reward team is involved in various strategic initiatives, such as developing and implementing comprehensive total reward strategies, conducting market analysis, and supporting the development of new pay and grading frameworks.

The role has a significant impact on the organisation by ensuring competitive compensation and benefits offerings, managing employee benefits programmes, and supporting the attraction, retention, and motivation of top talent.

What will I be doing?

We’re working to improve the lives of our colleagues and managers here in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • Developing and delivering employee communication materials to promote the Council’s total reward proposition, helping to attract and retain staff.
  • Providing guidance and support to managers and employees on compensation and employee benefits, ensuring they understand and utilise the available resources effectively.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of total reward programmes and making recommendations for improvements to ensure they remain competitive and aligned with industry best practices.

These key aspects of the role will allow you to engage in meaningful projects and initiatives that directly impact the well-being and satisfaction of Somerset Council employees. 

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. You will need:

  • Strong Analytical Skills: The ability to conduct market analysis and evaluate compensation and benefits data to ensure competitive offerings.
  • Job Evaluation: an understanding of job evaluation methods, Knowledge and experience in job evaluation processes to ensure consistency and equity in job grading.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Proficiency in developing and delivering employee communication materials related to total reward, and providing guidance and support to managers and employees on compensation and benefits matters.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring accuracy in developing salary structures, managing employee benefits programmes, and conducting regular audits of compensation and benefits programmes.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Experience working closely with HR leadership, finance, and other key stakeholders to align total reward programmes with business objectives.
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: The ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, and adapt to changing priorities and requirements.
