- There is an expectation to work in the Office as and when required. This role provides the opportunity for hybrid working, allowing you to work either from home, subject to managerial approval, or from one of our offices.
- 30 days' annual leave (in addition to bank holidays).
- The contract offered is permanent and full-time (37 hours per week).
What will I be doing?
The Operational Standards and Buildings Safety Level Lead will play a pivotal role in ensuring the Councils compliance with the Operational Standard Rules, Monitoring Data managing the Building Safety Level on behalf of the organisation.
This role will lead on the administration, audit, and financial oversight of levy-related processes, ensuring robust systems are in place to meet internal and external audit standards. This role additionally manages a team of Building Control Technicians, providing technical leadership and ensuring high-quality service delivery across Building Control Functions.
Your day-to-day work will primarily involve:
- Being Somerset Councils expert on levy implementation as a subject matter and the lead officer for system administration for the Buildings Control database.
- Being a lead officer in ensuring effective systems and controls to enable the service to be compliant in relation to the Buildings Safety Act 2022.
- Acting as the primary liaison with Finance, Legal and the Planning teams to ensure levy processes align with the broader council systems.
- Preparing and presenting reports, briefings, and recommendations to senior management, the Building Safety Regulator, and elected Members.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you have:
- A Degree or equivalent experience in a Building Control or regulatory field, Business Administration or related discipline.
- Commitment to work towards membership of a relevant professional body e.g. Tech CABE.
- Strong management skills to directly line manage a team of Building Control Support Technicians.
- In depth understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022 and other Building Control Legislation as well as strong knowledge of Local Authority finance and levy mechanisms.
- Experience in audit processes and standards building control services and policy development for service improvement.
