Some key information
- Contract commencing 2nd February 2026 and finishing on 27th November 2026 (43 weeks)
- 37 hours per week (total contract 1591 hours). Including regular evening, overnight and weekend work.
- Annual Leave for this grade: 25 days or, with more than 5 years continuous service 28 days.
- Please note, the amount stated will be pro rata for part-time and fixed term contract posts. The annual leave year starts on 1st April or 1st of the month in which the contract commences.
- We have the following vacancies for the 2026 season: 7 Instructors at Kilve Court, 2 at Charterhouse and 1 at Great Wood.
- Kilve Court is superbly located at the base of the Quantock Hills in a stunning area of outstanding natural beauty with Kilve beach only a stone’s throw away.
- Charterhouse has a warm and welcoming feeling. Located on the Mendip hills it is ideally situated for accessing the local crags and caves.
- Great Wood is a hidden gem in the Quantock woodland.
- SSE Outdoors are driven by a passion for residential outdoor learning where life lessons are learnt and memories will be cherished.

What will I be doing?
What will I be doing?
- The role will include delivering high quality outdoor learning and adventurous activities to the young people of Somerset and beyond.
- Helping to develop both onsite and offsite sessions.
- Working as part of a team to ensure a quality residential stay for all groups.
- Giving the young people of Somerset a chance to engage with adventurous activities.
- Managing all activity equipment and completing safety inspections.
- Commitment to following all safeguarding and risk management systems.
- SSE outdoors deliver from four centres in Somerset located on the spectacular Quantock and Mendip hills.
- We enable young people to discover what they can do – not what they can’t. Every child is encouraged to imagine, discover and achieve, and our fantastic instructors are the people who make this happen.
- We offer a comprehensive CPD support package and funding is available for training courses.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you have:
- At least one year working in the outdoors with young people.
- In-house experience of ‘onsite’ activities (such as low ropes) and/or 2 National Governing Body awards in the following activities: Archery, Hill Walking, Caving, Climbing, Paddlesport, Mountain biking and Rifle Shooting.
- A first aid certificate is essential for the role; however mandatory training will be arranged if necessary.
- All of our instructors will be able to take advantage of gaining qualifications in mountain biking, paddle sports, outdoor first aid and target sports, funded by SSE Outdoors, as well as the opportunity for D1 training.
