What will I be doing?

Somerset Council’s Strategic Asset Management team is part of the Council's Community, Place and Economy Directorate and is manages Somerset Council’s real estate assets – over 5,000 sites, including over 1,000 buildings. 

The Property Rationalisation team are responsible for managing vacant sites which are held for disposal. There are currently over sites ranging from properties occupied by guardians to empty and derelict commercial sites which pose an active risk to the public.

Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • Ensuring assets are handed to the team from external and internal stakeholders in accordance with the guideline’s provided, ensuring vacant possession where applicable.
  • Reading meters and liaising with utility companies to disconnect supplies where necessary.
  • Establishing the Health and Safety risks and ensuring suitable security provisions are in place.
  • Providing support and evidence to major estates development projects through project management, resource co-ordination and managing stakeholders. The projects usually involve the council's land or buildings but can vary greatly: from construction or remodelling improvement projects to closing sites and buildings ready to transfer these to another owner/operator, to rationalising current sites to reduce operating costs.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you:

  • Have experience in Project Management and managing land and property assets.
  • Can work independently and as part of a team, collaborating to achieve a common purpose.
  • Have experience facilitating discussions between internal and external stakeholders to discuss and evaluate complex matters and have some experience in managing divergences of opinion.
  • Can demonstrate professional confidence to make informed operational decisions daily.
