As a Teacher of Children & Young People (CYP) with Vision Impairment, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring every child with a vision impairment has the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve their full potential. You’ll also be supported to develop specialist skills that will elevate your practice and your career.
Your day-to-day work will involve:
- Supporting the learning and development of children and young people with vision impairment attending early years, mainstream and special education settings in Somerset and develop practice that is inclusive of vision impairment.
- Carry out specialist assessments and deliver programmes of support for children and young people with vision impairment aged 0-18 and up to 25 with an EHCP.
- Support the understanding of vision impairment through delivery of training to a range of professionals and families.
- Assist the local authority in fulfilling its statutory duties towards CYP with vision impairment.
- Work in partnership with and offering guidance to settings, professionals and families.
This is a pivotal position within our Specialist Support Team. You'll report directly to the Lead Teacher, benefit from a strong mentorship programme, and join a team committed to outstanding practice. Your work will have a profound and lasting impact on the children and families you support.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But we require you to:
- Have Qualified Teacher status and the mandatory Qualification for Teachers of Children and Young People with Vision Impairments (QTVI).
- Have successful and recent experience in teaching a wide range of pupils in mainstream settings (including those with additional needs).
- Have current knowledge and experience of working with children and young people using Braille, including the Grade II Level Braille qualification.
- Have the ability to travel on a daily basis to settings and homes that may not be supported by local bus services.
- Have working knowledge of SEND code of Practice, the Equality Act, and other current educational issues and legislation.
