• This role provides the opportunity for hybrid working, allowing you to work either from home, subject to managerial approval, or from one of our offices.
• 28 days' annual leave (in addition to bank holidays).
• The contract offered is permanent and full-time (37 hours per week).
What will I be doing?
We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that.
Your day-to-day work will involve:
• Inspecting street works within a geographical area of Somerset – you will be site based and mobile with a Council vehicle and checking that work sites are compliant with the Safety at Streetworks and Road Works (A code of Practice), including permit conditions.
• This crucial and statutory role helps keep the public safe, reduces disruption from unauthorised works that have overran or started early, it provides a crucial link between the coordination team and what is happening on the ground.
• Assisting statutory undertakers by providing advice, local knowledge to enable then to carry out the execution of works in a manner that will facilitate the expeditious movement of traffic on the highway network.
• You will use computer-based systems such as Street Manager and Confirm for record keeping and the recovery of works information. Inputting inspections onto a Personal Digital Assistant for transfer to Street Manager and the Confirm system, as well as online mapping and communication systems.
• Assisting co-ordinators and Statutory undertaker’s on road closure issues, ensuring diversion routes are compliant by inspecting alternative route signings to assess compliance with the approve signing schedule.
• Post closure inspections of alternative routes to determine damage that may have been caused to the highway as a result of using as an alternative route and direct SU’s to rectify any damage found.
• Assisting the co-ordination team by providing advice, local knowledge and experience of working methods to enable planning, co-ordination and execution of works in a manner that will facilitate the expeditious movement of traffic on the highway network.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you have:
• Good standards of numeracy, literacy and ICT capability.
• Demonstrable knowledge of New Roads & Street Works legislation, and the Traffic Management Act.
• Previous experience in Highways, Statutory Undertaker or the Street works environment.
• Knowledge of permitting scheme processes.
• A full clean driving license.
