• This role provides the opportunity for hybrid working, allowing you to work either from home, subject to managerial approval, or from one of our offices.
• 30 days' annual leave (in addition to bank holidays).
• The contract offered is permanent and full-time (37 hours per week).
What will I be doing?
We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. As a Principal Traffic Control Officer, you will have responsibility for the successful management of the Traffic Control and Signals assets and the associated infrastructure, to manage and improve the existing County Highway Network by improving safety and facilitating appropriate use and access. This role enables elements of Somerset Councils plan in a greener, more sustainable, flourishing and resilient Somerset.
Your day-to-day work will involve:
• Supporting the maintenance of all the Councils traffic control systems and ancillary equipment to ensure that it works in a safe and efficient manner.
• Overseeing the development of Traffic Control specifications, design standards and guidelines for use by all developers, consultants and contractors working in the County.
• Providing factual data and evidence to enquiries from solicitors, police, insurance companies and developers. Produce statements for legal proceedings, which may result in attendance at court as an ‘expert witness’.
• Managing Traffic Control Engineers and technicians, undertaking supervisory tasks and responsibilities which will include motivating staff, identifying training requirements as well as developing and mentoring staff.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you have:
• A relevant degree and/or professional qualification and/or equivalent experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft packages and CAD design software.
• Good written communication skills and the ability to forge good relationships by communicating effectively at all levels within the business, with clients and other organisations.
Please note, this role does require regular travel to sites throughout Somerset.
