What will I be doing?
You’ll be playing a pivotal role in maintaining, enhancing and ensuring the compliance of building services across Somerset Council’s corporate and commercial property portfolio.
You will achieve this by proactively managing installations, conducting planned and reactive maintenance of gas systems, and repairs to ensure statutory compliance, for example with Gas Safety regulations. This work will be in support of the Council’s strategy for safe, sustainable and compliant building operations.
This role requires close collaboration with various internal teams and external contractors to ensure that all gas installations meet the highest standards of safety. You will be required to liaise with contractors and suppliers to coordinate specialist works and procurement.
The outcome of this work will be the delivery of a high-quality service to our building users and communities. You’ll be directly and positively impacting the safety and comfort of building users, while also contributing to strategic initiatives such as our decarbonisation project.
A full UK driving license or the ability to travel to a diverse portfolio of corporate and commercial sites is necessary, and you may be required to respond to emergency callouts and participate in an out of hours rota. This role may also involve working at height, manual handling, and hand/arm vibration.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
- Gas Safe registered.
- Knowledge of Gas Safety Regulations; Building Regulations; Health and Safety Act.
- Registered commercial and domestic gas qualifications.
- OFTEC accreditation, WRAS certification.
- Technical proficiency and previous experience in installation, maintenance and repair of commercial gas systems.

The salary for the role is Grade 11 - £32,597 - £36,363 per annum.
A supplement allowance of £3,000 per annum is linked to the Gas Engineer (Building Services Engineer), bringing the salary to £35,597 - £39,363 per annum. This allowance is subject to National Insurance, Tax and Pension deductions and will be paid in accordance with standard payroll procedures.
The allowance is time-limited and will expire on 31/03/2029. All supplement allowances are reviewed 18 months from the original approval date and may be adjusted or withdrawn based on organisational need, role changes, or market conditions.
Please note:
- If the role is re-evaluated or the salary changes as a result of the Pay and Grading Review, the allowance may be reduced or cease entirely.
If the salary changes due to the NJC Pay Award, the supplement allowance will be adjusted accordingly to maintain the intended pay differential.
