Some key information
- Your work base will be at County Hall, Taunton but the majority of your time will be as a mobile worker (vehicle supplied) inspecting Somerset’s highways.
- Permanent contract
- The role is full time (37 hours per week) however hours of work are flexible to meet the requirements of inspections being undertaken within required timescales.
- 28 Days Annual Leave (plus bank holidays)
- Career progression within the Highways Service.

What will I be doing?
The Inspections Team are a key part of the highways service providing an essential public facing duty to keep the highway safe.
We’re working to improve the lives of people here in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. Your day-to-day work will involve:
- Undertaking statutory planned highway inspections to identify defects that pose a risk to highway users. Highway Inspections are either driven (rural areas) or walked (urban areas).
- Dealing with emergency situations on the highway that require urgent attention.
- Liaison with our Contractor regarding highway repairs
- Regular contact with the public to discuss reported issues.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you:
- Have been educated/qualified to at least BTEC in Civil Engineering with relative craft and/or technical experience
- Have practical experience of highways maintenance.
- Can identify, risk assess, prioritise, and order necessary highway maintenance works.
- Can evaluate information and identify solutions.
- Can organise your own workload, which will be varied.
