Somerset Council is reopening Bridgwater Library next week following the completion of major roof repairs.

The building in Binford Place had to be closed in October after ongoing external roof problems led to ceiling damage inside.

Temporary library provision in the town was set up in Bridgwater House while the work was done.

Now with the completion of works and the building fully fit for purpose for many years to come, Bridgwater Library is ready to open its doors to the public from Monday, 29 June, which means it will be up and running for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, starting on Saturday 4 July.

The works included:

  • fitting new rooflight windows,
  • internal redecoration,
  • repairs to water damaged areas inside the building and
  • repairs, re-rendering and updating the bays to the children’s library facing the park.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Lead Member for Communities, Waste Services and Environment and Climate Change said:

We are delighted to announce that Bridgwater Library is reopening and will look better than ever. We know how vital it is for the community – it provides so many different and vital services.

It’s perfect timing as the Summer Reading Challenge for children aged 4 to 11 launches on 4 July. It sounds exciting this year, with the theme of Read to the Beat and a focus on music. There’s a great choice of books in our libraries for children to enjoy – and challenge themselves. Just visit Summer Reading Challenge to find out more.

We’d like to thank our customers for continuing to support the library service in its temporary location, at Bridgwater House, and thank Bridgwater Arts Centre who played a vital role in supporting us to host our story times and author events.

Opening times for Bridgwater Library are:

  • Monday 9.30am to 5.00pm
  • Tuesday  9.30am to 5.00pm
  • Wednesday 9.30am to 5.00pm
