Somerset Council is carrying out a Community Governance Review (CGR) to evaluate the local governance arrangements for Huish Episcopi and Langport.

This review aims to ensure that local councils reflect the identity and interests of their communities and provide effective and convenient governance for residents.

The proposal under consideration is to combine Huish Episcopi Parish Council and Langport Town Council into a single new parish council, covering the same area.

The first stage of consultation has already taken place, and the majority of responses supported the idea of merging the two councils.

Based on this feedback and legal guidance, the Council is now recommending the following:

  • Creating a new parish council for Huish Episcopi and Langport
  • Dissolving the existing two councils
  • Having 11 councillors on the new council
  • Not dividing the new parish into wards

Residents and interested parties are invited to comment on these draft recommendations.

The consultation is now live and will remain open until 8 August.

The final decision will be made by the Council’s Constitution and Governance Committee in September 2025, with changes expected to take effect from April 2027.
