The Chair of Somerset Council, Cllr Mike Best, was privileged to meet the new Members of the Somerset Youth Parliament and the Advisory Group that supports them.
The meeting, held at County Hall in Taunton on Monday 13 April, provided an opportunity for the Somerset Youth Parliament team to learn more about how local government works, how decisions are made, and some of the challenges currently facing local councils.
Somerset Youth Parliament Members, Eva, Blake and Luca, shared their priorities and current campaigns, including mental health and wellbeing, social media and online safety, access to sport and activities, political education, financial literacy, work experience opportunities and ways to strengthen youth participation in local democracy. The discussion also highlighted barriers young people may experience when engaging with decision‑makers.
During the meeting, Cllr Best outlined ways in which young people could be more involved in council decision‑making, including opportunities to speak at Full Council meetings and to build stronger links between Somerset Council and Somerset Youth Parliament.
Cllr Mike Best, Chair of Somerset Council, said:
It was a pleasure to welcome members of Somerset Youth Parliament to County Hall. Young people have an important role in our local democracy, and it is vital that they feel confident and supported to represent the views of their peers. Listening to young people helps the Council better understand the issues that matter to them.
Kate Darlington, Engagement and Participation Officer, Somerset Youth Parliament Support and Development, said:
I’m thrilled and grateful that Somerset Youth Parliament was invited to meet with Cllr Mike Best to discuss how we can elevate the voices of young people in Somerset within the Council.
It’s a fantastic opportunity for both the young people and decision-makers to work together to improve positive outcomes for our communities.
The Members hope that this will be the start of a meaningful relationship where adults and young people can work collaboratively to navigate the challenges and opportunities emerging for the county as we all endeavour to be happy, healthy and safe in a robust and resilient Somerset.
