A Somerset Council package of safety and improvement works for Bridgwater starts at the Ascot Drive junction with the A38 this month.
Somerset Council is installing a new toucan crossing at the junction which will link to existing and planned active travel provision along Bristol Road.
This is the first part of a wider package of improvements in Bridgwater in the pipeline, which will include work at The Leggar and safety improvements at the Cannon/Cross Rifles junction.
Work on Ascot Drive will start in the week commencing 27 April, with temporary traffic lights in place from 5 May.
The team is using this opportunity to coordinate the safety works with extensive maintenance involving night-time resurfacing of the dual carriageway approach on the A38 from the north in the final 2 works of the programme, as well as repairs to damaged kerbing around the roundabout which will be done alongside the crossing works.
Some road closures will be needed at night in the final part of the programme and there will be advanced notice of these.
Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste Services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said:
These are important safety works – the first in a series of schemes across Bridgwater. The addition of the crossing is another key part of the town’s growing active travel network, making it easier for people to walk, cycle and wheel around the town.
We are aware of the potential for disruption at peak times; our team will be keeping the road open for most of the construction period. There will need to be some restrictions in place at various points in the programme.
If you spot a problem on the road you can report it quickly and easily via the Council’s Report a problem on the road page.
