Somerset’s Director of Public Health is encouraging residents to take a simple step towards better health after recently having her own NHS Health Check.

Alison Bell, Director of Public Health at Somerset Council, recently completed her check and is sharing her experience to help raise awareness and encourage others to come forward.

Alison said:

“Even though I work in public health and understand the importance of prevention, it was still really valuable to go through the NHS Health Check myself. It’s quick, straightforward, and gives you a clear picture of your heart health. I would really encourage anyone who is eligible to take up the offer, it’s a simple step that can help you improve your health in the long-term.”

The NHS Health Check is a national programme designed to assess the health of your heart and blood vessels (your cardiovascular health) and identify whether you may be at higher risk of developing serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke.

For people aged over 65, the check also includes information on the early signs of dementia, as some risk factors overlap. With expert advice and clear next steps tailored to each individual, it is a valuable way to stay informed and in control of your health.

If you’re aged 40 to 74, have no pre-diagnosed heart conditions, and have not had a check in the last five years, you can book your appointment at one of the following locations: Health Check locations.

  • Minehead Library, Minehead
  • Chard Library, Chard
  • The Victoria Club, Street
  • Kings Arms Hub, Wellington
  • Porlock Library, Porlock
  • Taunton Library, Taunton (evenings now added)
  • Yeovil Library, Yeovil (now every second Saturday of the month as well)

What happens during an NHS Health Check?

Your NHS Health Check usually takes 20 to 30 minutes and is carried out by a trained healthcare professional such as a nurse, pharmacist or healthcare assistant. During your appointment, they will:

  • Ask simple questions about your health, family history and any medication you take
  • Measure your height, weight and waist
  • Check your blood pressure
  • Take a quick blood test for cholesterol and blood sugar levels
  • Provide a personalised cardiovascular risk assessment
  • Offer tailored advice to help you stay healthy
  • Share your results with your GP for follow-up if needed

You will receive a cardiovascular risk score showing your likelihood of developing heart or circulation problems over the next 10 years, explained as low, moderate or high.

What happens after the check?

At the end of your appointment, you’ll have time to talk through your results and receive practical advice on how to improve or maintain your health.

Where appropriate, you may also be referred to local services such as stop smoking support or physical activity programmes.

Somerset Council is encouraging eligible residents to take advantage of this free service, helping residents feel informed, supported and take a proactive step towards a healthier future.
