Residents, organisations and professionals across Somerset are being urged to share their views before the public consultation on the county’s new Domestic Abuse Strategy closes on 26 January.

Somerset Council is developing a new three-year Domestic Abuse Strategy (2026–2029), which will guide how local services and partners work together to prevent abuse, protect those experiencing it, and support recovery.

The consultation is the final opportunity for people to help shape the strategy before it is finalised and published later this year. Feedback will directly influence priorities and actions across the county, ensuring the strategy reflects real experiences and responds to what works best locally.

Why your voice matters

Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. It includes emotional, psychological, economic, online, sexual and physical abuse, as well as controlling or coercive behaviour. Evidence shows it is often under-reported, with many people seeking help only at crisis point or not at all.

By taking part, residents and professionals can help ensure services across Somerset are accessible, effective and responsive, from early prevention and community awareness through to safe accommodation, specialist support and long-term recovery.

About the strategy

The Somerset Domestic Abuse Strategy will outline priorities for the next 3 years, focusing on:

  • Preventing abuse through education, awareness and community action
  • Protecting people at risk and improving access to support
  • Strengthening the response of professionals and partner organisations
  • Supporting recovery and helping people rebuild their lives free from abuse

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Executive Member for Communities, said:

“This is the final opportunity to influence how Somerset responds to domestic abuse over the next three years. Whether you have lived experience, work with people affected, or simply care about making Somerset safer, your views really do matter. Please take a few minutes to share them before the consultation closes.”

How to take part

The consultation is open until 26 January:

  • Complete the survey online via the Domestic Abuse Strategy public consultation page
  • Pick up a paper copy from Somerset libraries in Bridgwater, Taunton, Shepton Mallet or Yeovil

All responses are anonymous, and no personal details are required.
