Taunton Town Council and Somerset Council will once again be showing their support for the Armed Forces by holding a flag-raising ceremony on Monday, 22 June at 11am.

The service will be hosted at County Hall in Taunton by the Chair of Somerset Council, Councillor Mike Best, and the Mayor of Taunton, Councillor Bev Fernandes.

The Armed Forces Day flag will be flown at all Somerset Council’s main offices and at Taunton Town Council’s office at Deane House, Belvedere Road, leading up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June.

Councillor Mike Best, said:

Flying the Armed Forces Day flag is a meaningful way to show our support for the whole Armed Forces community, from serving personnel and reservists to veterans, cadets and military families.

It’s a chance to say thank you for their dedication, their sacrifice and the contribution they make, both in service to the nation and in communities across Somerset.

Councillor Bev Fernandes, Mayor of Taunton and Armed Forces Champion, said:

We are proud to join Somerset Council in marking Armed Forces Day through this flag-raising ceremony in the heart of Taunton. As the Town Council’s Armed Forces Champion, I am particularly pleased to recognise the dedication and service of our Armed Forces community, including serving personnel, veterans, reservists and military families.

The recent appointment of four Mayor’s Cadets has further strengthened the links between the Council and our local cadet organisations, highlighting the important contribution that young people make in supporting the values of service, commitment and community.

As a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, and having recently been awarded the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award, Taunton Town Council is honoured to play its part in showing our gratitude and support to all those who serve or have served our country.

Residents can find out more about the national event at armedforcesday.org.uk.

They can also show their support and join a fun-filled day of free events and displays for all the family at the Somerset Armed Forces Day in Vivary Park on Saturday, 4 July.

Somerset Armed Forces Day is a free community event; an opportunity for residents to show their support for, and celebrate, the men and women who make up the Armed Forces and Emergency Services communities: from those still serving, their families, veterans and cadets.

Over the past few years, it has proved to be a popular day out for all the family, with arena events, fly-pasts, displays of military and emergency service vehicles, as well as a variety of engaging stalls with information on British military history.
