Residents in Wellington are being encouraged to take a simple step towards better health this spring, with free NHS Health Checks now available locally every week and with appointments filling quickly, early booking is recommended.
With spring in full swing, it’s the perfect time for a reset. Local people aged 40 to 74 are being invited to book a free check and get a clearer picture of their health.
Appointments are now available at:
- Wellington Library every Wednesday
- Kings Arms Hub every Tuesday
The NHS Health Check is designed to spot early signs of conditions such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and diabetes, helping people take action before problems develop.
Delivered by trained healthcare professionals, the check takes around 20 to 30 minutes and includes simple measurements such as blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, along with personalised advice to help you stay well.
For residents aged over 65, the check also includes information on the early signs of dementia, as some risk factors overlap.
Cllr Graham Oakes, Lead Member for Public Health at Somerset Council, Climate Change and Environment, said:
“Spring is a great time for a reset, and taking a few minutes for an NHS Health Check can make a real difference. These free checks help people understand their health, spot potential issues early and take practical steps to stay well. With appointments available right here in Wellington, it’s an easy and accessible way to look after yourself.”
At the end of the appointment, you’ll receive a personalised risk score for developing heart or circulation problems over the next 10 years, along with practical advice on things like diet, physical activity, alcohol intake and stopping smoking. Where needed, people can also be signposted to local support services.
If you’re eligible and haven’t had a check in the last five years, now is the time to act.
