Somerset Council is asking residents, organisations, and professionals to share their views on how work to support those affected by domestic abuse should be delivered in the years ahead.
The consultation, launched today, invites feedback to help shape Somerset’s new Domestic Abuse Strategy – a key document that will set out how services across the county work together to prevent abuse, protect those experiencing it, and support recovery.
The new strategy will build on the work already underway through Somerset Domestic Abuse Service and its partner agencies. It aims to reflect the voices and experiences of local people, ensuring support is accessible, effective, and responsive to the needs of all communities.
Why your views matter
Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, or background. It includes emotional, psychological, economic, online, sexual and physical abuse, as well as controlling or coercive behaviour.
The consultation will help Somerset Council and its partners understand what is working well and where improvements can be made – from early intervention and community awareness, to safe accommodation and long-term recovery.
About the strategy
The Somerset Domestic Abuse Strategy will outline priorities for the next five years, focusing on:
- Preventing abuse through education, awareness and community action
- Protecting people at risk and improving access to support
- Strengthening the response of professionals and partner organisations
- Supporting recovery and helping people rebuild their lives free from abuse
Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Executive Member for Communities at Somerset Council, said:
We want everyone in Somerset to feel safe and supported. This consultation is a vital opportunity for people to share their experiences, insights and ideas so we can shape a strategy that truly meets local needs. Whether you work in support services, know someone who is or has been affected, or simply care about making a difference — we want to hear from you.
How to take part
You can share your views online using the Somerset Abuse Strategy Public Consultation page, or request a paper copy at your local library in Bridgwater, Taunton, Shepton Mallet or Yeovil.
The consultation runs from 10 November until 26 January, after which public feedback will help to shape and develop the final of the Somerset Domestic Abuse Strategy, which will be published later this year.
