Somerset residents have praised free NHS Health Checks for their friendly staff, clear advice and welcoming venues.
One person said the check found they had high cholesterol. The result gave them a clear goal to improve their health.
Somerset Council is encouraging everyone who is eligible to book a free check.
One resident said:
“(Practitioner) was fantastic and I’m so glad I went as I found I had high cholesterol. I was going to start diet anyway but now I have a goal so will be easier to stick to.”
Other residents praised the time and care given by staff:
“Ashley was helpful, gave me time and explained everything clearly. Thank you very much. The library is a great setting with ample parking nearby and the library staff helpful.”
“Andrea, who carried out my health check, was brilliant. She was very professional but also very friendly and kind and put me at ease. I would recommend her.”
One person also wanted more people to know about the checks. They said:
“This is an excellent service that should be given more publicity.”
An NHS Health Check takes about 20 to 30 minutes. It can help you understand your risk of heart and circulation problems.
The check includes:
• a blood pressure check
• cholesterol and blood sugar tests
• advice based on your results and the changes you could make.
Appointments are held at community venues, including libraries.
The free checks are for eligible adults aged 40 to 74 who live in Somerset or are registered with a Somerset GP.
You must not already be receiving treatment for a diagnosed vascular condition. You must also not have had an NHS Health Check in the past five years.
