On Monday 16th June 2025 the Sen.se / Imagine the Possibilities team proudly hosted the third annual Learner Voice event at the Bridgwater & Taunton College Conference Centre, bringing together students from across Somerset’s special schools to explore the growing world of supported internships.
This year’s event marked a significant milestone in the county’s commitment to inclusive employment, showcasing the dramatic growth in supported internship programmes—from just 2 to 15 in recent years, representing a remarkable 500% increase in available placements.
Students from Fairmead, Fiveways, Polden Bower, The Mendip School, and Selworthy School participated in an engaging and interactive day. Using a treasure hunt format, learners explored a wide range of opportunities presented by local employers and education providers. The format encouraged curiosity, conversation, and confidence-building.
Following lunch, students took part in practical tasks designed to mirror those used in real skill assessment days—giving them a taste of what applying for a supported internship might involve.
The event aimed to raise awareness and aspirations not only among young people but also among school staff and families, highlighting the real and growing pathways into meaningful employment.
Emma France of Specialist & Personalised Training Services (SPTS), who served as maître d’ for the day, was instrumental in keeping the event running smoothly. Her coordination ensured a welcoming and well-structured experience for all involved.
The Sen.se / Imagine the Possibilities team extends heartfelt thanks to all the businesses and providers who participated, as their partnership is vital in creating inclusive futures for our young people.
