Please can we remind you to check your support staff have completed moving and handling training which is a Legal requirement for all staff involved in physically assisting pupils with mobility needs (not behaviour) and particularly to consider for those children and young people who may be transitioning to your setting in September 2024.

Please note that Moving and Handling training is now in 2 parts:

PART ONE On-line theoretical presentation:
a) A review of relevant legislation, including ‘Manual Handling Operations Regulations, 1992 (as amended)’.

b) A review of Spinal Function; causes of back injury and back care.

c) A review of the current Risk Assessment requirements with examples.

d) Online Theory Assessment (Microsoft Forms Quiz)

Please note: e-learning Moving and Handling session and test questions (Part 1) MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR to attending the practical session.

This information will be emailed to attendees 2 weeks before the course date and will require staff a maximum of 3 hours to complete.

PART TWO Face-to-face practical training with qualified Occupational Therapist and covers:

Principles of safe moving and handling; practical demonstration of manual handling techniques using the principles of biomechanics

Introducing small manual handling aids

Practical demonstrations of safer moving and handling techniques

Hoist and sling use

The SSE website will be advertising shortly places to book for Moving and Handling training on 11 July 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Independent Living Centre in Chelston Business Park, Wellington. Once this session has been fully booked a further session may be provided in the afternoon at the same venue.
