Care England has published new good practice guidance to help prevent choking deaths among people with learning disabilities.

The guide is aimed at social care providers, commissioners, managers and frontline staff. It stresses that choking risks often develop over time and can be reduced when warning signs are recognised, support plans are kept up to date and staff follow them consistently.

It covers risk assessments, safe posture and positioning, appropriate supervision, eating pace, staff training, incident reporting and partnership working. It also emphasises that people should be supported to eat safely while maintaining their dignity, choice, culture and quality of life.
