Young carers have told us that it can be hard to join in fun activities or enjoy time away from home. Caring for someone and the cost of days out can mean missing chances to relax, see friends, or spend time together as a family.

To help with this, a new Young Carers Grant has been created. The grant is designed to make it easier for young carers to enjoy days out, short breaks, or ageappropriate activities. It aims to reduce isolation, support wellbeing, and give families time together away from daily caring tasks.

Families can apply for up to £500 a year. The grant can be used for things like:

  • Tickets for events or attractions
  • Travel or food costs
  • Accommodation for a short break
  • Support for the person you care for, so you can take part or enjoy time away

You can apply more than once during the year, up to the £500 total. We will keep improving the scheme by asking young carers and families to share their experiences. This helps us understand what works well and how we can make the grants even better.

You can apply through the Somerset Community Foundation website. The Local Offer has its Young Carers pages, and more about the grant at Creating young carers grants to reduce isolation.
