The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the independent regulator for nurses and midwives in the UK, and nursing associates in England. Social care providers can sign up to NMC newsletters to receive the latest news, updates, guidance and support.

The NMC is keen to make sure employers of nurses in independent social care have access to the same information and support as health employers.

Support for the South West

Caroline Holt is the NMC’s Employer Link Service Adviser for the South West. She works closely with Michele Harrison, Regulation Adviser, whose focus is on the NHS.

There is an Employer Link Service adviser in each region. Their role is to support the independent health and social care sector, particularly nursing homes.

A key part of Caroline’s role is to share useful tools and guidance about nursing. This includes raising awareness of the Employer Advice Line, the support available to nurses, witnesses and those making referrals, and delivering targeted learning for those involved in the oversight and management of nurses.

Free learning sessions and advice

Caroline would like to hear from providers in Somerset who want to find out more about the support available. She can also deliver free learning sessions for providers and teams.

To request information or arrange a learning session, contact Caroline at caroline.holt@nmc-uk.org.

Resources for employers

The NMC website includes resources for employers, including guidance on managing concerns and advice about raising a concern as an employer.

Employer Advice Line

The NMC’s Employer Link Service also has an advice line for employers who have questions about a nurse’s fitness to practise.

If you have concerns about an individual’s practice, or are thinking about making a referral, you can contact the Employer Advice Line from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by calling 020 7462 8850 or emailing employerlinkservice@nmc-uk.org.

  • If you prefer, you can leave a suitable time for the team to contact you. This can help if it is difficult to find time or space to talk confidentially.
  • Around a third of callers to the Employer Link Service advice line are advised that a referral is not needed for the nurse discussed.
