Somerset has established a Pathfinder Programme with five schools—four primary schools from across different localities and one secondary school. These schools offer direct support and guidance to others seeking to implement relational policies and practices.
Trauma-informed approaches acknowledge the widespread presence of trauma and recognise the potential impact it can have on individuals, families, networks and communities. In Somerset, becoming trauma informed means building a workforce that can identify when someone is affected by trauma or adversity and respond in ways that are supportive and help prevent further harm.
Relational policy and practice are central to Trauma Informed Somerset. Evidence suggests that a whole-school relational approach benefits everyone, especially young people facing difficulties. This approach focuses on helping staff build understanding, setting clear expectations, identifying pupils’ needs, encouraging school attendance and providing timely, appropriate support.
Schools participating in the Pathfinder Programme are available to support others interested in developing relational policy and practice within their own settings. Leaders are encouraged to reach out to these schools directly.
