Somerset Council’s internal short break care provision for children with disabilities has been rated “Outstanding in all areas” following a two-day Ofsted inspection on 25–26 February 2025.

The Elms, which provides essential short break care, was recognised for delivering services that consistently exceed the standards of good. Inspectors concluded that the home contributes to improved outcomes and positive experiences for children and young people who require help, protection and care.

The Ofsted report identified several areas of strength:

“Children enjoy their short breaks and were seen laughing and having fun with staff.”

“Safeguarding is managed exceptionally well in this home.”

“The manager is influential in changing the lives of the children in this home and has strong expectations of her staff.”

To mark the outcome, the team will be hosting a party later this summer, celebrating with children, families, and staff.

If you are interested in supporting children and young people with disabilities, Somerset Council welcomes new volunteers to join its short break services. To find out more about volunteering opportunities, please contact SomersetCorporateParentingBoard@somerset.gov.uk.
