Flags at Somerset Council buildings flew at half-mast today (Monday 9 February) as a mark of respect to Somerset Councillor Tony Robbins, who sadly passed away unexpectedly this weekend.
Tony was a Liberal Democrat Member serving Somerset Council in the Mendip Hills Division since his election in May 2022.
He contributed to a wide range of committees, including the Planning Committee (East), Licensing and Regulatory Committee, Scrutiny Committees, and Full Council, always bringing diligence, balance, and integrity to his responsibilities.
His commitment extended into community life. He was elected to Wells City Council in 2007, holding many roles, always determined to support and strengthen the historic city he cared so much about, and called home. They included serving as Mayor of Wells (2010-2011) and, most recently, as Chair of the Council’s Finance Committee.
Chief Executive of Somerset Council, Duncan Sharkey, commented that Tony would be remembered for his warmth, humour, and his humanity. And that the thoughts of all at the Council were with his family and friends.
Leader of Somerset Council, Cllr Bill Revans, added: “I was so sad to hear the sudden news of Cllr Tony Robbins’ passing at the weekend.
“Tony was a decent man and a much-valued colleague who brought his expertise and local knowledge to licensing, planning and scrutiny committees, as well as being a conscientious divisional colleague.
“He will be hugely missed by all of us at Somerset Council and we send condolences to his wife Sylvia and daughter Georgie.”
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Wells, Cllr Louis Agabani, spoke of Tony’s qualities such as his knowledge, expertise, and willingness. He said: “I know I speak for all Councillors and staff at the City Council in saying that the loss of Tony is significant, and felt deeply.”
Somerset Council colleagues will have an opportunity to pay tribute to Tony at the next Full Council on 4 March, when flags will be lowered once again throughout the duration of the meeting.
Funeral arrangements will be issued by the family in due course.
