Somerset Council is relaunching its Little Book of Health and Wellbeing to support residents during Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 and beyond.

Produced by Somerset Council’s Public Health team, the updated and rebranded booklet provides practical, evidence-based advice to help people look after their mental health and wellbeing in everyday life.

Simple tools to make a difference

The guide brings together simple tools and techniques that can make a real difference, including:

  • Setting achievable goals and celebrating progress
  • Managing stress and building resilience
  • Improving sleep, diet and physical activity
  • Finding time for rest, relaxation and activities that bring joy

It also highlights the Five Ways to Wellbeing: connect, be active, take notice, give, and keep learning – encouraging people to take small, positive steps each day.

The booklet recognises that mental health is experienced differently by everyone. While it focuses on self-help strategies, it also signposts where to go for additional support when needed.

Councillor Graham Oakes, Lead Member for Public Health, Climate Change and Environment at Somerset Council, said:

“Looking after our mental health is just as important as looking after our physical health, but it’s something we don’t always prioritise.

“The Little Book of Wellbeing offers simple, practical advice that people can use in their daily lives. Whether it’s taking small steps to manage stress or finding ways to reconnect with others, these actions can have a positive impact over time.”

The booklet has been adapted with permission from NHS and academic sources, ensuring the information reflects current evidence and best practice.

Somerset Council is encouraging residents to make use of the guide and to seek support if they need it.
