Somerset Council has adopted a new Volunteering Policy and Framework, celebrating the incredible contribution of the more than 1,400 volunteers who give their time across Somerset every year.

Volunteers support council services in more than 70 different roles, working with 22 teams and service areas: from libraries and countryside services to public health, culture, and supporting children and young people. Their dedication helps services reach more people, strengthens communities and makes Somerset a kinder, more connected place to live.

The new policy sets out a clear and consistent approach to volunteering across the Council, ensuring volunteers are well supported, valued and able to thrive in their roles. It builds on work led by the Council’s Central Volunteer Team, bringing together volunteering arrangements following local government reorganisation.

Cllr Theo Butt Philip, Lead Member for Transformation, Human Resources and Localities, said:

Our volunteers give their time, energy and compassion so generously, and this policy is really about saying thank you. Whether someone helps out every week or just now and then, their contribution matters.

We want every volunteer to feel welcomed, supported and proud of the difference they make in their community.

Volunteering plays an important role in delivering the Council’s wider ambitions, helping people gain new skills and confidence, improving wellbeing, and creating strong connections between individuals, services and communities.

Somerset Council would like to offer a huge thank you to every volunteer who gives their time to support local services. Your contribution is valued, appreciated and makes a real difference every day.
