We are delighted to announce the launch of our new PartTime Timetable Protocol, alongside a set of practical resources, to support schools, professionals and parents in using parttime timetables in a clear, consistent and lawful way.

Parttime timetables can sometimes be necessary, but they should always be exceptional, timelimited and centred on the child’s needs. The new protocol brings together clear guidance on when a parttime timetable may be appropriate, what good practice looks like, and the responsibilities of schools, families and local authority services.

What does the protocol do?

In short, the protocol:

  • Sets out when parttime timetables should and should not be used
  • Clarifies legal duties around attendance and education
  • Explains roles and responsibilities, including leadership oversight and multiagency involvement
  • Emphasises planning, review and reintegration back to fulltime education
  • Supports a childcentred, evidencebased approach with clear documentation

The accompanying resources are designed to make this guidance easy to put into practice, helping schools record decisions, review progress and ensure parttime timetables are used safely and appropriately. They include:

  • Part-time timetable agreement document
  • Part-time timetable checklist
  • Guide for parents on the use of part-time timetables

Used well, a parttime timetable can support a shortterm transition or meet a specific need. Used poorly, they can restrict access to education and widen inequalities. This protocol helps everyone work from the same understanding, supporting better outcomes for children and young people across Somerset.
