Somerset residents are being encouraged to make a simple but powerful pledge this autumn – to support friends, family members and colleagues who are thinking about quitting smoking.

Smokefree Somerset has launched the ‘What’s Your Why?’ Pledge, a community driven campaign that encourages open conversations, shared motivation, and practical support to inspire loved ones to take that first step towards a healthier, smoke-free future.

This campaign isn’t about pressuring anyone to quit. It’s about showing you care – taking the time to listen, offer support, and start a conversation if you’re worried about someone. The pledge and resources are there to help you start these caring conversations, especially if you’re unsure how to begin.

Why talking helps

Quitting smoking isn’t just about willpower. Nicotine addiction affects brain chemistry, and for many people, smoking is tied to stress relief, routine, and physical dependence.

Research shows that encouragement from friends and family can make a real difference when someone is thinking about quitting. By signing the pledge, Somerset residents can show loved ones that they are not alone – and that free, non-judgemental support is available locally.

How you can help

The Public Health Team at Somerset Council and NHS Somerset are asking people to:

Check in – Listen and be present. Ask how they’re feeling about smoking, but only when they’re ready to talk.

Celebrate small wins – Even one less cigarette or a smoke-free day is progress. Recognition builds confidence.

Offer distractions – Suggest a walk, chat, cup of tea, or a small activity to manage cravings.

Stay patient – Slip-ups happen. Your calm, encouraging presence matters and helps them feel supported.

Local voices leading the way

Leanne, a Somerset mum of three who successfully quit smoking, explained why pledging matters:

“Quitting smoking has been one of the best adult decisions I have made. It has ensured I can live a healthier, (smell free) and more affordable life as a mum of 3 children. I have seen health and money benefits from quitting and wish I had done it sooner. By joining the ‘What’s Your Why?’ Pledge, I hope to inspire others to take this life-changing step and support them in their journey to a healthier, smoke-free life.”

Alison Bell, Director of Public Health Somerset for Somerset Council, said:

“We know that quitting smoking is not always easy, but support from loved ones can make all the difference. The ‘What’s Your Why?’ Pledge is about normalising those caring conversations and showing that nobody has to quit alone. We want to inspire community support that encourages more quit attempts and improves health for families across Somerset.”
