Every community is affected by the widespread problem of domestic abuse, which impacts both individuals and their families. Solicitors often find themselves on the front lines, navigating sensitive and complex cases where the stakes are incredibly high.

To better equip legal professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to support clients experiencing domestic abuse, Somerset Council has launched the Domestic Abuse Toolkit for Solicitors.

A practical solution to a critical Need

The Domestic Abuse Toolkit for Solicitors is a free, comprehensive resource designed to address the challenges solicitors face when working with clients affected by domestic abuse. It aims to empower solicitors with:

  • Clear and concise guidance on the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, including new legal provisions like non-fatal strangulation laws and coercive control.
  • Practical advice for conducting safe and empathetic consultations. With information on how to identify someone might be experiencing domestic abuse and what to do if someone discloses that they are.
  • Steps to ensure client confidentiality and safety, particularly in high-risk cases.
  • A better understanding of the support that is available, the Somerset Domestic Abuse Service can support with safe accommodation options, a confidential helpline, 1-2-1 and group support plus other resources and counselling.

By providing these tools, the toolkit helps solicitors enhance their practice while making a meaningful difference in the lives of their clients.

Complementary Training Opportunities

In addition to the toolkit, Somerset Council has free domestic abuse awareness training to support solicitors further. These sessions provide deeper insights into recognising signs of abuse, understanding the emotional impact on clients, and connecting them to appropriate local services.

A Call to Action for Legal Professionals

Solicitors play a crucial role in the justice system, often serving as a lifeline for people experiencing domestic abuse. With the launch of this toolkit, Somerset Council is urging solicitors across Somerset to:
